How rare is U in a 5-letter word?
U is the scarcest of the five vowels at this length: fewer than 1,600 five-letter words carry one, against nearly 3,900 for E. It is also the most predictable. Half of them put the U in the second square, and only 25 words in the entire list end in one. Knowing a 5-letter word with a U is in play narrows the field far more sharply than any other vowel clue.

U words for Wordle and Scrabble
Most players treat U as the letter that tags along behind Q. The numbers say otherwise, and unlearning that habit is worth a guess or two every week.
The Wordle angle. Only about 69 of these 1,600 words contain QU — one in twenty-three. A confirmed U is therefore almost never a signal to reach for QUICK or QUIET; it is a signal to check the second square, which holds half the U words outright, and then the third. The other pattern worth knowing is OU: HOUSE, CLOUD, PROUD, MOUNT and MOUTH all use it, so a live O next to a live U points somewhere very specific. Ruling out the last square costs nothing, since only 25 words finish on a U and they are nearly all borrowings like ADIEU and BAYOU.
The Scrabble angle. There are only four U tiles in the set, each worth a point, and they are the tiles players most often get stuck with — holding a U with no Q is a classic dead rack. Spend it well: QUACK at 20 and JUMPY at 19 are the strongest everyday plays, SQUAB reaches 16, and the ceiling is FUZZY at 29. When you want the best play from a full rack, the Scrabble word finder ranks it for you.

From a rack, not a list?
This page browses every five-letter word containing a U. If you have a fixed set of tiles instead, drop them into the anagram solver or the word unscrambler and filter to length five to see only the U words you can actually build from your letters.
Where do these words come from?
“An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of a different word or phrase, typically using all the original letters exactly once.”
— “Anagram,” Wikipedia
That rearranging is exactly what these tools do, and every result is checked against a public-domain word list, documented in full on our methodology page. Official tournament play uses different dictionaries, so always confirm against the one your game follows.
- Our word list. The public-domain ENABLE lexicon, merged for the word unscrambler with dwyl/english-words, released under the Unlicense.
- North America. The official authority is the NASPA Word List (NWL2023), maintained by NASPA and effective February 2024, with 196,601 words.
- Rest of the world. Tournament play uses Collins Scrabble Words (CSW24), published by Collins under WESPA, with 280,887 words.
5-letter words with a U, answered.
How many 5-letter words contain a U?
Just under 1,600 in this public-domain word list, which makes U comfortably the rarest of the five vowels inside five-letter words — less than half as common as O and under a fifth as common as E.
Does the U always follow a Q?
No, and the myth is worth unlearning. Only about 69 of the 1,600 five-letter U words contain QU at all — roughly one in twenty-three. The overwhelming majority, from ABOUT to TRUTH to SUGAR, have nothing to do with Q.
Where is the U most likely to sit in a 5-letter word?
The second square holds about 790 of them, half the total, and the third about 440. The last square is almost empty: only 25 five-letter words end in U, and nearly all are borrowings such as ADIEU, BAYOU, HAIKU and BIJOU.
What is a good Wordle guess with a U?
MOUTH, TRUCK and SUPER test the U alongside common consonants. If you already have an O, try the OU pair — HOUSE, CLOUD, PROUD and MOUNT all hang on it, and it is one of the most frequent vowel pairings at this length.
Which 5-letter words with a U score well in Scrabble?
QUACK at 20 and JUMPY at 19 are the best everyday options, with SQUAB close behind at 16. The outright ceiling for a five-letter U word is 29, held by FUZZY. Each word here shows its Scrabble score so you can sort for the biggest play.
