Where does the I sit in a 5-letter word?
Around 2,400 five-letter words contain an I, and they lean heavily towards the front of the word. About 970 put it in the second square and another 740 in the third — seven in ten keep it in the first half. I behaves differently from the other vowels: it crowds into the first half of the word and all but vanishes from the last square, which makes a yellow I unusually easy to place.
The Wordle angle. Start by ruling out the ending. Only about 140 five-letter words finish on an I, and hardly any of them are the kind of word a puzzle uses, so the fifth square is effectively free information. That leaves slots two and three, which between them account for seven in ten I words — test those before the fourth. RAISE and IRATE make good openers precisely because they probe the I early while testing other high-frequency letters.
