How often does E appear in 5-letter words?
E sits inside more than 3,800 five-letter words — close to half of them. It is the most common letter in written English, and in five-letter words it is doubly common because so many endings lean on it: the silent E of SHINE and STONE, the past tense of ASKED, the comparative of LATER. Finding an E is the easy part. Because almost half of all five-letter words contain one, the clue that actually moves you forward is knowing which square it belongs in.
The Wordle angle. The E is not spread evenly across the word. The fourth square holds far more E's than any other — roughly 1,700 words — because that is where the silent E of SHINE, the -ED of ASKED and the -ER of LATER all land. The second slot is next at about 1,100, the last slot about 930, and the third square trails badly at around 570. So when an E comes back yellow, test the fourth square before the third: you are chasing three times as many candidates.
