Why is the second letter always a vowel?
More than 440 five-letter words open with M, and they share a quirk no other common opener has: English does not let M begin a consonant cluster. There is no ML- or MR- to worry about, so the second square is a vowel in every one of these words but a single borrowing, MBIRA. That makes a 5-letter word starting with M unusually easy to narrow down.

Most opening letters make you guess twice: once for the consonant blend, once for the vowel. M skips the first step entirely.
The Wordle angle. After an S you have to weigh ST, SP, SC, SH, SN, SL and SW; after a B it is BL or BR; after a D it is DR. After an M there is nothing to weigh — the second square is a vowel, full stop. That turns a green M into one of the most efficient openings in the game, because your next guess can go straight at the vowel rather than the structure. A, O and I lead the field, so MARCH, MOUNT and MIGHT make good probes; MOUSE and MOUTH follow up neatly if an OU pair looks live.
The Scrabble angle. M is a three-point tile, on a level with B, C and P, and there are only two in the set. The top of the M list is steep but obscure — MUZZY at 28 is the fifth highest-scoring five-letter word anywhere, MEZZO reaches 25 — so for a play you can actually make, MAXIM at 16 is the realistic target. What letter comes after M in a 5-letter word?
A vowel, essentially always. Unlike S, B or D, the letter M does not form consonant blends at the start of an English word: there is no ML- or MR-. Out of more than 440 five-letter M words, exactly one puts a true consonant in the second square — MBIRA, a borrowed name for an African thumb piano. Even the MY- words such as MYTHS and MYRRH are using Y as their vowel.
Why does that make M words easier to guess?
Because a green M in the first square hands you the second square for free. Instead of spending a guess on consonant blends the way you would after S or B, you can go straight to sorting out which vowel it is — and there are only six candidates including Y.
