D is a letter that rewards a plan. The words behind it cluster into a handful of shapes, and identifying the shape is faster than grinding through the list.
The Wordle angle. With a green D in the first square, the second letter carries almost all the remaining information. R covers the DR family — DREAM, DRIVE, DRINK, DRAFT, DRESS — which is the largest consonant cluster here. E covers the DE- prefix words. Anything else and you are in the plain-vowel group with DAILY, DOUBT and DIRTY. One well-chosen guess usually settles which of the three you are in, and the list collapses from there.
The Scrabble angle. D itself is a modest two points, but it fronts the sixth highest-scoring five-letter word in the entire list: DIZZY, at 27, beaten only by JAZZY, WHIZZ, FUZZY, FIZZY and MUZZY.
