About S endings

Why do so many 5-letter words end in S?

More five-letter words end in S than in any other letter — close to 2,700 of them. The reason is grammatical rather than phonetic: S is the letter English uses to make nouns plural and verbs present tense, so it lands on the end of words that already exist. Around nine in ten entries here are exactly that — a shorter word wearing an S.

Why S is different

S words for Wordle and Scrabble

S is the one ending where the two games pull in opposite directions: it is the least useful letter to find in a Wordle answer and the most useful tile to hold in Scrabble.

The Wordle angle. Wordle's answer list deliberately skips simple plurals, so a green S in the final square is much rarer than the raw word count suggests. Treat that square with suspicion: if you land one, the answer is far more likely to be a word that was always spelled with an S — CHESS, GLASS, FOCUS, BONUS, VIRUS, BASIS, CHAOS — than a plural. Filtering here and scanning for non-plurals is usually the fastest route home.

The Scrabble angle. S is the best hook in the game. Laid against a word already on the board it pluralises it and opens a whole second word in the same move, scoring both at once. That is why experienced players keep one in the rack instead of spending it, and why a cheap one-point tile so often decides a close game. When you want the top play from a full rack rather than a browse, the Scrabble word finder ranks it for you.

Where do these words come from?

“An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of a different word or phrase, typically using all the original letters exactly once.”

“Anagram,” Wikipedia

That rearranging is exactly what these tools do, and every result is checked against a public-domain word list, documented in full on our methodology page. Official tournament play uses different dictionaries, so always confirm against the one your game follows.

5-letter words ending in S FAQ

5-letter words ending with S, answered.

How many 5-letter words end with S?

Nearly 2,700 in this public-domain word list — almost three times as many as the next ending, E. S is not really a word ending so much as a grammatical one: it turns nouns plural and verbs present tense, so it attaches to words that already exist.

Should I guess a word ending in S in Wordle?

Rarely as your answer, but often as a probe. Wordle's answer list leaves out simple plurals, so a word like STARS is very unlikely to be the solution — yet guessing one early still tests five letters cheaply. Save the true S-enders such as CHESS or FOCUS for when you think you have it.

Which 5-letter words ending in S are not plurals?

About one in ten. CHESS, GLASS, BRASS, GRASS, CROSS, DRESS, PRESS, BLISS, FOCUS, BONUS, VIRUS, ATLAS, BASIS, CHAOS, MINUS, GENUS and LOCUS all end in S without being plural, which makes them the realistic candidates when a puzzle really does end in S.

Why is S so valuable in Scrabble?

Because it hooks. A single S can pluralise a word already on the board and let you lay a whole new word across it in the same turn, scoring both. Most strong players hold one S back rather than spend it, even though the tile itself is worth only one point.

Which 5-letter words ending in S score well in Scrabble?

The S is cheap, so the points sit in front of it: JUMPS, QUIPS, ZINCS and WAXES all reach the mid-teens. Every word on this page shows its Scrabble score, so you can sort for the biggest play rather than guess.
