R is a helpful ending in Wordle and a poor one in Scrabble, and both facts come from the same cause: the letters it keeps company with are the commonest and cheapest in the game.
The Wordle angle. A green R in the final square is a strong clue because the fourth square is so heavily constrained. E accounts for about 362 of the 523 candidates, so testing it first is almost always right; if it comes back grey, A and O cover another 118 between them and you are close to done. The smaller -IR and -UR families are worth remembering only when everything else has failed. OTHER, AFTER, UNDER, WATER and POWER are all strong probes that test the ending and several common letters at once.
The Scrabble angle. This is the cheapest of the common endings. R, E, A and O are all one-point tiles, so a word built on -ER has almost nothing to work with: the highest-scoring five-letter word ending in R manages only 17. JOKER at 16 is within a point of that ceiling and far more likely to be playable, with FIXER at 15 and BOXER at 14 behind it.
