Why do so many 5-letter words end in D?
Almost 600 five-letter words close with D, and two thirds of them are there for one reason: -ED, the ending English uses to put a verb in the past. Strip those away and what remains is a compact set of about 190 everyday words — BREAD, FIELD, WORLD, CHILD, SOUND. That split is the most useful thing to know about a 5-letter word ending with D.

D words for Wordle and Scrabble
Every list of five-letter D words is really two lists stacked together, and telling them apart is what turns a green D into a solved puzzle.
The Wordle angle. Roughly 390 of these words are -ED past tenses, and puzzle setters lean away from them for the same reason they avoid plurals: the answer would be a grammatical variant rather than a word in its own right. The practical trick is to exclude E and see what is left. The survivors are a short, familiar set — SOUND, ROUND, BREAD, FIELD, WORLD, CHILD, GUARD, BLOOD, THIRD, YIELD — and a green D in the last square points at one of them far more often than at ASKED or MOVED.
The Scrabble angle. D is a two-point tile, which puts it a step above the vowels and common consonants without being expensive to hold. It also hooks: adding a D to a verb already on the board can open a second word in the same move. For raw points, FIXED and WAXED reach sixteen by hiding an X behind the ending. When you want the best play from a full rack, the Scrabble word finder ranks it for you.

Where do these words come from?
“An anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging the letters of a different word or phrase, typically using all the original letters exactly once.”
— “Anagram,” Wikipedia
That rearranging is exactly what these tools do, and every result is checked against a public-domain word list, documented in full on our methodology page. Official tournament play uses different dictionaries, so always confirm against the one your game follows.
- Our word list. The public-domain ENABLE lexicon, merged for the word unscrambler with dwyl/english-words, released under the Unlicense.
- North America. The official authority is the NASPA Word List (NWL2023), maintained by NASPA and effective February 2024, with 196,601 words.
- Rest of the world. Tournament play uses Collins Scrabble Words (CSW24), published by Collins under WESPA, with 280,887 words.
